A Note from our Founder of Lilly’s Heart, Keisha Leaks
About Lilly’s Heart
Lilly’s Heart is named after my mother. I named it Lilly’s Heart because like the heart, my mom pumps oxygen (life) into every person she meets. She ensures that everyone has what they need when she is around. Her laughter, her smile and her humor give others life. She is always ready to serve rather than to be served. I admire that about her.
But also like the heart, bad habits and unhealthy choices can clog your arteries and cause a heart blockage. The parental blockage in my mom’s heart resulted in lack of responsibility when it came to raising me, so for much of my childhood, I lived with my grandmother. Distractions withheld her from being the mother I needed growing up, and my father was not there. As an adult, I came to realize that perhaps my parents had their own childhood traumas that prevented them from being equipped with the parental tools I needed as a child.
This is how Lilly’s Heart can help.
I decided to start a nonprofit as a vehicle to use my story to help others. My goal with Lilly’s Heart is to take my own experience, which could have been worse, and turn it around to assist other parents with being transparent and honest about their own childhood traumas, in order to create effective communication with their children and build a strong relationship with them - even their adult children, in hopes of breaking generational curses. It’s OK to ask for help because it takes a village, and Lilly’s Heart is a part of that village.
It’s never too late to change and develop or improve your relationship with your children – just like a heart blockage, it takes small, consistent steps to see better results. Whether you are from a two-parent home, single-parent home or blended family, I pray Lilly’s Heart will give parents a renewed mindset to become the best version of themselves that their children need.
Additionally, Lilly’s Heart will incorporate the most beautiful heart valve of my mother and that’s pumping acts of kindness (love) back into our community. The acts will include assisting families and individuals with their “life-happens” moments - from groceries, utility assistance to financial literacy.
It’s all about matters of the heart.
